At first glance, this work can be brushed off as self-indulgent. It works on several levels, in fact. First, Stan makes fun of himself and, by extension, the tormented and self-absorbed artist. Second, it is very meta. In a way Stan is saying, “if you want a Stan Bitters, what could be more real than an actual image of me on a block of ceramic?” This is Stan’s ironic nod to the commodification of art in the social media age.
It is Andy Warhol and Carl Andre combined. Very post-modern, really.
